What you will experience in my yoga classes is what I describe as a full body-mind-spirit connection. I will guide you through a visualized meditation along with movement and breath. Anyone can do this type of yoga, from the floor, a chair, the sofa or wherever you find yourself most comfortable.
One of my biggest frustrations with modern yoga is the prevailing thought amongst friends or acquaintances when speaking of yoga, is the common response “I can’t do yoga” and/or “I’m not flexible” which is undoubtedly spurred by the never ending growth of social media and images of bendable Gumby’s in their pretzel poses. If that sounds bitter….it’s only against the messages that these talented athletes are sending to the ordinary everyday health seeker. You CAN and you SHOULD be doing yoga. Yoga is for EVERYONE and in its’ traditional sense and origin, is so much more about the connection of your mind and your spirit to your body in whatever poses, positions and asanas YOU find suitable for your body, using tools and props to assist in achieving relaxation and sometimes complete surrender in the chosen pose.
During my sessions, you will be guided to tune into your body, quieting the mind and connecting to your breath. We will use the breath as an instrument to deepen the stretches, release tension and even traumas that are often stored in the body and open up to the connection and power that lies within each and every one of us. Learning to control the breath helps harness the ever wandering mind, balances the nervous system which trickles down and actually affects every organ in the body. They say the breath is the remote control for the nervous system and ultimately can help us navigate the direction of our lives, from better management of everyday stresses and frustrations to helping us manifest and bring to fruition our deepest desires and dreams.
As we move in each pose, we will use the breath to expand the space in our muscles and tissues, the depth of our stretch, and again, to release tension, stiffness and blocks stored in the joints, muscles, tendons and fascia. Visualization helps to guide the breath into the areas of the body we are seeking release or healing. The combination of visualization and breath are powerful tools we will use during my Intuitive and Functional Yoga sessions. Functionality, focusing on movements to assist us in our everyday chores, habits and movements, which can help thwart repetitive motion or “carpal tunnel” type injuries and Intuitively, by learning to listen to our body. It is alive, it speaks to us and we just need to slow down, tune-in and learn to listen.
